King Jai Singh II of Jaipur constructed the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi in the year 1724. Five observatories were constructed by the maharaja in the 18th century while he was in power. The one in Delhi is the first of these five to be constructed. The locations of the remaining four sites are Ujjain, Mathura, Varanasi, and Jaipur. These telescopes were built with the intention of collecting astronomical data and making precise predictions about the motion of the solar system's planets, moon, sun, and other bodies. At the time it was constructed, it was unique. The observatory had experienced significant decline by 1867, when Britain had taken control of India.
