The state is also known for mining precious metals such as gold, lead and aluminum. Washington is the only state named after the President of the United States.

HOW TO REACH WASHINGTON

  • Flight - Washington D.C. has three main airports that serve on daily basis. Washington Dulles International Airport primarily serves all international flights to D.C. over there. Well connected to many cities around the world such as London, Dubai, Paris, Tokyo, Munich and Brusselst. Major airlines on these routes include British Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates, Air France and Qatar Airways.
  • Road - Greyhound is a company that operates a fleet of buses connecting various cities in the United States. Most of these buses stop at Union Station on Capitol Hill. There are many buses that go from New York to DC. BestBus, Eastern Shuttle, Megabus, Focus Bus, Washington Deluxe and Royal Sprinter are the major companies that serve buses into the city. These buses stop at Capitol Hill, Dupont Circle, Bethesda, Maryland and Arlington. There is a bus service to Washington, D.C. From neighboring Canadian cities such as Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec and Montreal.
  • Rail - Well connected to the rest of the country with the Washington DC Railroad. Several trains run through the city and Amtrak trains serve Boston, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, Cincinnati and Indianapolis. Maryland Rail Commuter (MARC) trains connect DC. The Virginia Railroad Express (AER) provides daily train service from suburban Virginia to the capital.   • Metro - Metro serves DC and also extends to Virginia and Maryland. Passengers are billed according to distance, and Metro uses a tap-on-tap-off system to calculate fares. To ride the subway, you need a SmarTrip card that you can buy at the station and download to your Apple Pay or Google Pay mobile wallet.
  • Metrobus - Metrobus is the regional bus for this region. You can buy a SmarTrip card to ride metrobuses or pay with exact change and the fares are usually $1.35 or $1.25. To indicate that you want to exit the bus, tap the yellow bar at the top to signal the driver to stop.
  • Bike - Biking is a great way to explore Washington DC. Whether you're driving past the Washington Monument or plunging down the Mount He Vernon Trail, the best way to avoid traffic is on two wheels.
