The Galata Tower provided excellent surveillance within the city walls and was of great military importance. It was later also used as a fire alarm tower during the Ottoman Empire before being converted into a prison during the reign of Sultan Suleiman 'The Magnificent'.

HOW TO REACH GALATA TOWER

  • Flight - Galata Tower is 14 km away from the nearest airport, Istanbul Ataturk Airport. Jet2, easyJet, Turkish Airlines, TUI, Pegasus Airlines, PIA, IndiGo and SunExpress all operate direct flights to Istanbul, Turkey.

HOW TO GET AROUND

  • Train - Take the train from Habarimani Ataturk Airport to Yenikapi and then from Shishane to the Galata Tower, which takes about an hour. The fare is 8₺, which is approximately INR 94.
  • Bus - Alternatively, take a bus from Ataturk Airport to Shishany and walk 10 minutes to Galata Tower. It takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes and costs INR 70-90.
  • Taxi - This is a convenient option, but more expensive than other options. About 20 minutes by taxi from the airport to the tower.
