Sri Lanka Grants Visa-Free Access to Indians Starting October

Introduction

Sri Lanka, the tropical island paradise in the Indian Ocean, has made an exciting announcement: from October 2024, the country will be visa-free for Indian tourists! This decision is a huge step towards promoting tourism and relations between the two neighboring countries.

Invitation to Paradise
This decision is intended to attract more tourists to the country, explained Harin Fernando, advisor to the Ministry of Tourism. In addition to India, travelers from countries such as China, Germany, Australia, Japan, France, Canada and several nations in West Asia, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, will also benefit from the new arrangement. This announcement follows the controversy surrounding the increased fees for visas on arrival in Sri Lanka, previously handled by a foreign company.

Success Story Repeats Itself
Interestingly, the new program follows on from a similar pilot project that was launched in October 2023. At that time, Sri Lanka offered free visas to tourists from India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand. This project ran until March 2024 and has now been significantly expanded to include some other countries. As part of the pilot project, travelers received a double-entry visa on arrival, but this was valid for a maximum stay of 30 days in Sri Lanka.

India: Engine of Tourism
India has traditionally been the most important source market for Sri Lankan tourism. In October 2023, Indian tourists topped the rankings with over 28,000 arrivals and a share of 26 percent, followed by Russian tourists with over 10,000 arrivals.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry underlined the importance of relations with India, calling it "one of the most important in our foreign policy." In the past, India was the main source of tourists to Sri Lanka. In September 2023 alone, over 30,000 Indian tourists came to the country, which is 26 percent of the total.

Increased Cooperation Hoped
Sri Lankan MP V. Radhakrishnan also stressed the importance of tourism for relations with India, pointing out that 60 percent of Sri Lanka's visitors come from India. He highlighted the need for closer cooperation between the two countries, especially in the tourism sector.
